How Zeni POS Supports KRA eTIMS Through DigiTax

By Zeni POS Team · 9 min read

The till, the OSCU integrator, and the invoice KRA and your customers can actually use.

Supporting tax in a Kenyan POS is not a PDF of the VAT Act. It is a working path from the cart to a signed electronic tax invoice. Zeni POS does that through DigiTax — the OSCU integrator that talks to KRA eTIMS — so cashiers are not told to “do invoices after we close”.

Two products, one counter

Zeni POS owns the commercial sale: line items, prices, stock deduction, cashier identity, cash versus M-Pesa. DigiTax owns the fiscal sale: taxpayer PIN, branch, tax type per item, eTIMS signature, QR or verification URL, and transmission into KRA’s environment. DigiTax is licensed as an OSCU provider; OSCU means the control unit signs invoices online against eTIMS. Confusing those two jobs is how vendors stamp “eTIMS certified” on a tablet case.

What your customer should see

A walk-in may only want a simple receipt. A contractor, clinic or farm buying on account wants a tax invoice they can defend. That invoice should show tax breakdown and a way to verify it on eTIMS — typically a QR code whose payload includes PIN, branch and signature, or a DigiTax receipt URL that resolves to the signed document once KRA has accepted it. Credit notes exist for returns so you do not delete a signed invoice and hope nobody notices.

Go-live is a process, not a checkbox

You sign up the business on DigiTax, complete KRA’s eTIMS service request with the serial and details the integrator provides, wait for KRA confirmation, then move the DigiTax business from TEST to LIVE. LIVE keys hit production eTIMS. If you already invoice on another solution, expect a KRA change-of-solution step. Zeni’s onboarding is to import products with the right tax classes and train who may issue credit notes — then keep selling on the same Android or browser till.

When the network is ugly

OSCU signing needs a path to DigiTax and eTIMS. Zeni POS still records the shop sale offline. DigiTax documents offline receipt URLs so you can give a stable link while the signature catches up. That is the practical answer for Kenyan fibre and 4G, not a claim that KRA works without the internet. We set that expectation on the demo rather than hiding it in a feature grid.
